暗証 (あんしょう）Codes

暗証番号は英語のPINです。暗証番号は、今、銀行やインターネットなど、いろいろなところで必要です。

An anshoubango is a personal identification number (PIN). PINs are now required in many situations. 

語源（ごげん）etymology

暗（あん、くらい）　dark 　

証  (しょう、あかし） proof 

暗はくらいという意味ですが、専門的なことがよくわからないと言う使い方もあります。

The word an means "dark," but it can also mean that you aren't very familiar with a specific topic.

例：　女の人「生け花をどう思いますか？」

Ex:     Woman:  What do you think about ikebana?

　　　男の人「その道に暗いので・・・」　

           Man:      I don't know much about it... (literally "that road is dark")

そして、この「暗証」という言葉は、禅（ぜん）から来ました。

禅（ぜん）をしていてさとったと思っても、さとりを証明（しょうめい）できないので、

ほかの人にはわからないということから、暗証といわれました。

Also, the word anshou comes from Zen Buddhism. 

Even if you think you've reached enlightenment, you can't prove that to other people.

Therefore, they referred to such people as anshou. 

暗証番号は他の人にはわからない番号なので、似ていますね。

Since a PIN is not known to other people, the word anshou was used for it, too.
