我慢 (がまん）patience

I understand why you are angry, but be patient.               Japanese people are too patient.

                                                  Alright...                How come they don't speak their opinion?

日本人はよく我慢（がまん　patience )　が　大切と言います。ときどき、意見（いけん）を強くいうことは悪い事と思われます。

Japanese people often say that being patient is important. Sometimes, stating one's opinion strongly is seen as a bad thing.

我 ＝ わたし　oneself

慢 ＝ 慢心　  to be conceited

もともと、「我慢する」は、自分はすごいと慢心（まんしん）するという意味でした。

Originally, "gaman suru" meant to brag or to be conceited.

我慢すると、たくさんのひとから批判（ひはん criticism）もあります。

If you are conceited, many people might criticize you.

批判（ひはん）されても、耐える（たえる endure, bear)

がまんする = to bear, to be patient の意味になりました。

Thus, "gaman suru" came to refer to being patient in the face of criticism.
